Headaches

Headache is pain in any region of the head. Headaches may occur on one or both sides of the head, be isolated to a certain location, radiate across the head from one point.

A headache may appear as a sharp pain, a throbbing sensation, shooting pain or a dull ache. Headaches can develop gradually or suddenly, and may last from less than an hour to several days.

Migraine Headache

Typical characteristics of Migraine Headaches:

‣ Lasts 4-72 hours

‣ With Aura or Without Aura

‣ Unilateral location (One sided)

‣ Pulsating quality

‣ Moderate or severe intensity

‣ Nausea

‣ Photophobia (Light Sensitivity)

‣ Phonophobia (Noise Sensitivity) - Rare

Cervicogenic Headache

Typical characteristics of Cervicogenic Headaches:

‣ Lasts hours to days

‣ With Aura or Without Aura

‣ Starts from Neck/Base of Skull location

‣ Dull quality

‣ Moderate or severe intensity

‣ Nausea

‣ Photophobia (Light Sensitivity) - Sometimes

‣ Phonophobia (Noise Sensitivity) - Rare

Tension Headache

Typical characteristics of Tension Headaches:

‣ Lasts 30 mins-7 days

‣ 10 episodes of headaches over 1-14 days per months for > 3 months

‣ Bilateral Location (Both Sides)

‣ Pressing or tightening (non-pulsating) quality

‣ Mild to Moderate intensity

‣ No Nausea or vomiting

‣ No Photophobia (Light Sensitivity)

‣ No Phonophobia (Noise Sensitivity)
